ALAIN DE BOTTON- SEYAHAT SANATI EVEREST’TEN ÇIKTI!

Harika haber geçen hafta Everest Yayınevi’nden geldi.

İlk kez 2002’de çevirdiğim ve Sel Yayıncılık tarafından basılan Seyahat Sanatı, onca yıldır raflardan hiç inmedi; şimdi 22 yıl sonra bu kez Everest’ten tekrar raflarda.

Bir maceranın 22 yıl boyunca aynı dozda heyecan uyandırıyor olmasını neye borçluyuz?

De Botton’un seyahat kavramını, turizm endüstrisinin yaptığı gibi “nereye?” ve “ne zaman” sorularından ziyade, “ne şekilde” ve “neden” sorularıyla ele almış olmasına. Çevirmenin de naçizane, seyahat etmeye aşık, ömrünün önemli bir kısmını türlü türlü ülkede sadece gezerek değil, uzun uzun kalışlarla, yazıyla kışıyla yaşamış olmasına.

Bu seyahatler sırasında an olurdu, okuduğum kitabın beni etkileyen bir cümlesi bittiği yerde kafamı kaldırır, uzak bir noktaya bakışlarımı sabitlerdim (ne büyük mutluluktur bu). Trendeysem trenin düzenli uğultusu, bir meydandaysam meydanın kilise çanlarına karışan cıvıltısı, bir parktaysam çocuk kahkahaları o anın es’ine eşlik etti ve çok sıklıkla Seyahat Sanatı zengin içeriğiyle yakamı bırakmadı, belki senelerce.

Bu kitap seyahatlerimi anlamlı kıldı; yıllar içinde ben de kendi çevirimle kitabı okur için anlamlı kıldığımı hissettim, haddim olmadan. Zira haddimin sınırları, gezginin biricik deneyimiyle kısıtlı. Seyahat eden kişi sayısına eşdeğer seyahat deneyimi var dünya üzerinde. Şu dünyaya yolcu olarak gelmiş insan nüfusu kadar mutluluk arayışı var.

Bir kitap varsa eğer bir kitabevi uzaklığında, seyahate anlam katacak, etkiyi derinleştirecek; bana çevirmen olarak usulca teşekkür etmek düşer. Okura, yayınevlerine, yazara, seyahat ede ede bitiremediğim sonsuz mavi küreye, Dünya’ya. Uzay boşluğuna uzanacak kadar uzun bir teşekkür.

Everest Publishing has just informed me of the wonderful news.

The first time published with my translation in 2002, up on the shelves during all the years that passed, Alain de Botton’s The Art of Travel is now out, once again, issued by Everest after 22 years. Why would a book still create a certain level of excitement on its reader throughout all those years?

The answer is De Botton’s engagement into the concept of travel through the inquiry of “how” and “why”, instead of the questions of “where to?” and “when”, which are the typical ones asked by the tourism industry. And a second answer might be, modestly speaking, its translator’s being in love with traveling, having spent a major part of her life not only wandering around, but also actually living in various countries during long stays, rain or shine.

I remember some of the moments during those journeys, when a sentence that hit me in the book that was reading impressed me and made me look up, gaze into the horizon for a brief pause (what a big delight). That was also when, either accompanied by the sound of the train I was riding on, or the cheer of the children at the school yard nearby, or the gentle sound of a town square entangled with the church bells, ideas from the Art of Travel visited me, making the moment even more meaningful throughout the years that passed by. The number of traveling experiences equals the number of travelers in the world. The number of people searching for happiness in this world count nearly as high as its population. If this book still exists on the bookshelves, ready for the readers to enrich those experiences and add meaning to new searches towards bliss, then we may do nothing but express gratitude, to its writer, to the publishing houses, to the blue wide ball I cannot get enough of, no matter how much I travel. A gratitude that would extend along the space in space, long enough to embrace the World in its arms.
